Academic Enrichment Classes
Academic Enrichment Classes are for students with strong achievement or emerging academic potential who are ready for additional challenge. Placement is determined by the school using evidence such as achievement, teacher judgement, learning behaviours and demonstrated potential.
Students access explicit teaching, rich learning experiences and targeted opportunities to deepen their thinking. They remain connected to their year group and may access selected ACE (Adjustment, Challenge and Enrichment) Pathways opportunities.
Vision Statement
Our vision is for students in the Academic Enrichment Classes to recognise their strengths, grow in confidence and see themselves as capable learners with strong potential.
We aim to create a learning environment where students are encouraged to engage with challenge, ask thoughtful questions, explain their thinking and build greater independence. Students are supported to strengthen key academic skills while developing the confidence, motivation and learning behaviours needed to continue growing.
Through ACE Pathways, students are provided with the right balance of adjustment, challenge and enrichment. This supports them to learn at their point of need, develop their potential and access opportunities that help them grow as confident, capable and motivated learners.
What is an Academic Enrichment Class?
Academic Enrichment Classes are designed for students who demonstrate strong achievement or emerging academic potential and would benefit from additional challenge within the mainstream curriculum. Where required, these classes may operate as a Stage 2 composite class and/or a Stage 3 composite class, depending on student need, cohort profile and enrolment numbers.
These classes provide a purposeful learning environment for students who are ready for increased pace, more complex tasks, greater independence and richer opportunities to extend their thinking. Students learn alongside like-minded peers who also show strong potential and require additional challenge at their current point of need.
Academic Enrichment Classes are an important part of Brookvale Public School’s ACE Pathways approach. ACE stands for Adjustment, Challenge and Enrichment, and reflects the school’s commitment to providing students with learning environments that match their strengths, needs and readiness. Through this approach, students with academic potential are recognised, challenged and supported to continue growing as confident and capable learners.
Academic Enrichment Classes provide explicit teaching, rich curriculum content and targeted opportunities for students to deepen their understanding, explain their thinking, solve problems and build confidence. Students remain connected to their year group while also accessing selected ACE Pathways opportunities, including possible collaboration with Academic Extension Classes where appropriate.
Student placement is reviewed over time. If a place becomes available in an Academic Extension Class and a student demonstrates readiness for further challenge, movement from Academic Enrichment into Academic Extension may be considered.
What to expect as a student in an Academic Enrichment Class
Students in an Academic Enrichment Class can expect to be challenged, supported and encouraged to grow as confident learners.
Across the school week, students engage in explicit teaching, rich curriculum content and carefully planned learning experiences that provide additional challenge within the mainstream curriculum. Learning may involve increased pace, more complex tasks, deeper discussion and opportunities for students to explain their thinking, solve problems and apply their learning in different ways.
Students learn alongside peers who demonstrate strong achievement or emerging academic potential and who are also ready for additional challenge. This creates a learning environment where students can build confidence, ask thoughtful questions, collaborate with others and develop greater independence.
Students can expect to:
- engage in challenging learning across all curriculum areas
- build strong academic skills through explicit teaching and clear feedback
- work with more complex ideas and tasks
- deepen their thinking through discussion, problem solving and reflection
- develop confidence, independence and positive learning behaviours
- learn alongside like-minded peers who are ready for additional challenge
- remain connected to their year group through school programs, events and learning opportunities
- access selected ACE Pathways opportunities where appropriate
- collaborate with Academic Extension Classes through selected learning experiences, projects or enrichment opportunities
Academic Enrichment Classes provide students with a strong pathway for continued challenge, growth and opportunity. Students are supported to keep developing their potential while learning in an environment that matches their current strengths, needs and readiness.
How is placement in an Academic Enrichment Class determined?
Brookvale Public School organises classes in accordance with NSW Department of Education policies. Class placement is determined through whole-school class formation processes that consider a range of educational, social and wellbeing factors. Academic Enrichment opportunities are part of Brookvale Public School’s approach to meeting the diverse learning needs of students and are not considered separate enrolment streams.
Current Brookvale Public School students
Current Brookvale Public School students may be considered for placement in an Academic Enrichment Class through the school’s internal class placement process.
Teachers and school leaders review available information about each student, including achievement data, classroom learning, work samples, learning behaviours and demonstrated potential. This helps the school identify students who would benefit from the increased pace, challenge and enrichment offered in an Academic Enrichment Class.
Students applying for an Academic Extension Class
Students who apply for an Academic Extension Class are also considered for Academic Enrichment placement. No additional application is required.
If the school determines that an Academic Enrichment Class is the best-fit placement for a student’s current achievement, learning behaviours, readiness for challenge and point of need, an Academic Enrichment placement may be offered.
This recognises the student’s strong potential and ensures they are placed in a learning environment designed to provide appropriate challenge, support and continued growth.
Enrolment requirements
For students not currently enrolled at Brookvale Public School, enrolment applications are considered separately in line with NSW Department of Education enrolment procedures and available enrolment capacity.
Ongoing review
Student placement is reviewed over time. If a place becomes available in an Academic Extension Class and a student demonstrates readiness for further challenge, movement from Academic Enrichment into Academic Extension may be considered.
