Science and technology

Science and technology is mandatory for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

In science and technology, students explore the natural and made worlds. They learn how to apply scientific and technological skills, knowledge and understanding across a broad range of contexts.

Science provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real world problems. The inquiry and skill-based nature of science opens doors to ideas and discoveries.

Science and Technology enjoys a strong profile at Brookvale Public School with students encouraged to think critically and creatively about the world around them. In our rapidly changing world the ability to be curious, innovative and resilient are more important than ever. These are just some of the skills and qualities encouraged during Science and Technology lessons. We use Primary Connections to engage with investigative and inquiry based learning activities, and have been involved with The Australian Academy of Science to trial and develop these units of work. Our school offers design challenges where students are asked to work technologically by identifying a need, designing a solution, working collaboratively, communicating information and responding flexibly to change and challenges.

Brookvale Public School has an ongoing partnership with the CSIRO's Scientists in Schools program. Our resident scientist visits several times a year to deliver syllabus related content to each class while acting as a mentor to students and modelling the role of scientists in the community. We are active participants in the Northern Beaches Learning Alliance (NBLA) Science network which strives to continually increase the knowledge and skills of teachers and students.
