Values & Expectations

Values Education

Our students thrive in a safe, inclusive and nurturing environment.

They develop appreciation of our school expectations - respect, responsibility and personal best through daily social interaction and specific learning experiences.

Brookvale Public School shares the responsibility for teaching values to our students with our families and the school community.

The core values of integrity, excellence, respect, responsibility, co-operation, participation, care, fairness and democracy are on display each day in our school.

PBEL

At Brookvale PS, a strong, responsive student welfare program is in place and clear discipline policies ensure a safe, nurturing learning environment for all. Positive Behaviour Engaging Learners (PBEL) is seen as a fundamental process in the promotion of positive behaviours, teaching of appropriate social skills, and management of problem behaviours.

The philosophy of this program aims to improve outcomes for all students by creating sustainable school-wide, classroom and individual systems of support that acknowledge the link between positive behaviour and enhanced learning environments.

The philosophy of this program aims to improve outcomes for all students by creating sustainable school-wide, classroom and individual systems of support that acknowledge the link between positive behaviour and enhanced learning environments.

Brookvale PS promotes three core behavioural expectations – BE RESPECTFUL, BE RESPONSIBLE and BE YOUR PERSONAL BEST.

PBEL provides students and staff at Brookvale PS with a consistent and proactive system for defining, teaching and supporting appropriate student behaviours conducive to quality learning. These expectations are taught to all students through explicit social skills instruction within all classrooms as well as being embedded within the daily interactions of school life.

In understanding what these expectations are, how they apply to all areas of the school, and the clear consequences of not following these expectations, students gradually learn to regulate their own behaviours. They are responsible and accountable for their own behaviour and develop an awareness of the impact their choice of conduct has on the people around them.

In order to reinforce positive behaviours, students are rewarded regularly and acknowledged through the school merit systems and assemblies. Our reward system reinforces positive behaviour from students with mini-merits, certificates and star pins for displaying the three expectations.

Our school promotes restorative practice. This means reflects our collective belief that mistakes are an opportunity to learn. When students make poor behavioural choices that impact negatively upon themselves or others, they are given time to discuss this behaviour with an adult. This includes reflection and a solution-focused approach to moving forwards. A clear flowchart exists to enable teachers, students and the school community to understand the consequences of inappropriate, disruptive behaviour.

PBEL increases student engagement and learning by increasing ‘on-task' behaviours and decreasing distractions in the learning environment. The result at Brookvale PS is a positive school environment in which student academic and social outcomes are improved through increased teaching time and consistent expectations of behaviour.
