Kindergarten at Brookvale Public School
A joyful start to school
Kindergarten is a special year. It is a year of new friendships, big smiles, exciting discoveries and proud first moments.
At Brookvale Public School, we want every Kindergarten child to feel happy, safe and ready to learn. We know that starting school is a big step for children and families, and we take great care to make the first year of school warm, welcoming and full of joy.
Our Kindergarten classrooms are calm, caring and engaging places where children learn routines, build confidence, make friends and begin to see themselves as capable learners.
Learning in Kindergarten
Kindergarten students learn across all areas of the curriculum, with a strong focus on the important foundations of reading, writing, spelling, mathematics, creativity, movement and social development.
Children are supported to learn in ways that are clear, structured and engaging. They have opportunities to listen, talk, practise, play, create, explore and share their thinking.
In Kindergarten, every small step matters. We celebrate effort, progress and the excitement that comes with learning something new.
Explicit teaching in Kindergarten
At Brookvale Public School, Kindergarten students benefit from explicit teaching. This means teachers clearly explain what students are learning, show them how to do it, guide them as they practise and provide support along the way.
For young learners, this is especially important. Kindergarten students are learning how school works, how to listen and respond, how to follow routines, how to form letters and numbers, how to read words, how to solve problems and how to share their thinking.
Explicit teaching helps Kindergarten students because it:
- gives them clear instructions
- breaks learning into small, manageable steps
- helps them practise important skills
- builds confidence through success
- supports every child to know what they are learning and how to improve
This approach helps children feel settled and successful. They are not left to guess what to do. They are shown, supported and encouraged as they grow.
Wellbeing in Kindergarten
A happy child is more ready to learn. In Kindergarten, wellbeing is part of every day.
Our teachers spend time getting to know each child as an individual. We help students learn classroom routines, build friendships, manage big feelings, solve small problems and understand what it means to be part of a school community.
Kindergarten wellbeing at Brookvale includes:
- helping children feel safe and welcome
- supporting friendships and play
- teaching routines gently and clearly
- encouraging kindness, patience and respect
- helping children build independence
- celebrating effort and personal best
We know that the first year of school brings many new experiences. Our staff work closely with families to support children as they settle into school life.
Champion Groups
Kindergarten students are part of our Champion Groups program. This is one of the ways we help every child feel known, valued and connected at Brookvale Public School.
Champion Groups bring students from different year groups together with a teacher who becomes another trusted adult at school. For Kindergarten students, this helps them build connections beyond their classroom and feel part of the wider Brookvale community.
Through Champion Groups, Kindergarten students:
- meet older students who can support and encourage them
- build friendships across the school
- learn about teamwork, kindness and belonging
- have another familiar adult who knows them
- feel more confident in the playground and around the school
For our youngest students, Champion Groups help make a big school feel smaller, friendlier and more connected.
Belonging from the beginning
Kindergarten students are an important part of Brookvale Public School from their very first day.
They join in school events, assemblies, special celebrations, buddy activities and everyday moments that help them feel proud to belong. Over time, they grow in confidence, independence and connection.
We want every Kindergarten child to think:
“I am safe here.”
“I have friends here.”
“My teachers know me.”
“I can learn new things.”
“I belong at Brookvale.”
Working with families
Families play an important role in a child’s first year of school. We value strong partnerships with parents and carers and understand that starting Kindergarten is a big milestone for the whole family.
Our staff are here to answer questions, share progress and work together to support each child. When families and school work together, children feel more secure, confident and ready to learn.
A beautiful first year
Kindergarten at Brookvale Public School is about much more than starting school. It is about helping children feel happy, capable and connected.
It is a year of learning names, tying shoelaces, reading first words, counting collections, making friends, trying again, sharing stories, joining in, being brave and discovering the joy of school.
We are proud to give our Kindergarten students a positive, caring and exciting start to their learning journey.
