High potential and gifted education
At Brookvale Public School, we recognise that high potential is not limited to academic achievement or a particular classroom. Students may demonstrate advanced abilities in thinking, creativity, leadership, sport or other areas of learning.
We are committed to identifying these strengths, providing appropriate challenge and creating opportunities for high potential and gifted students to develop their talents and achieve their personal best.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers use assessment, classroom observations and knowledge of individual students to recognise high potential and identify opportunities for further growth.
Challenge in every classroom
Through explicit teaching, differentiation and purposeful extension, we provide learning experiences that respond to students' existing knowledge, abilities and readiness for challenge.
Opportunities to develop talent
Our students can explore their strengths through academic competitions, creative and performing arts, sport, leadership and a wide range of enrichment activities.
Learning beyond the classroom
We connect students with opportunities beyond Brookvale, including inter-school competitions, representative pathways and broader NSW Department of Education programs.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) recognises that students may demonstrate advanced potential across four domains: intellectual, creative, physical and social-emotional.
At Brookvale, HPGE is part of our everyday approach to teaching and learning. Students do not need to be enrolled in a specialist class to be recognised as high potential or to receive appropriate challenge and extension.
We understand that potential develops differently for every child. Our approach focuses on recognising individual strengths, responding to learning needs and providing opportunities for continued growth.
How we support high potential and gifted students in every classroom
High-quality teaching is the foundation of HPGE at Brookvale Public School.
Our teachers use explicit instruction to establish strong knowledge and skills, alongside regular assessment to understand what students know and what they are ready to learn next.
When students demonstrate advanced understanding or mastery of content, teachers can adjust learning to provide greater depth, complexity or pace. This ensures students continue to be challenged rather than simply completing more work at the same level.
Our classroom approach includes opportunities for students to think critically, solve complex problems, explain their reasoning, explore new ideas and apply their learning in different contexts.
We also recognise the importance of wellbeing, belonging and positive learning relationships. Students are encouraged to approach challenges confidently, learn from mistakes and develop independence as learners.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
Intellectual potential
Students with intellectual potential may demonstrate advanced reasoning, problem-solving, memory or an ability to understand and apply new ideas quickly.
At Brookvale, students can extend their thinking through mathematics enrichment, academic competitions, debating, public speaking, coding and other challenging learning experiences.
Opportunities include Maths Olympiad, Maths Games, Maths Explorer, the Australian Maths Competition, ICAS Assessments, the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition and the NSW Premier's Spelling Bee.
Creative potential
Creative potential may be demonstrated through imagination, originality, innovation and the ability to express or develop ideas in different ways.
Brookvale offers a strong creative and performing arts program, including junior and senior dance ensembles, training and concert bands, school choirs, specialist music teaching and performance opportunities.
These experiences allow students to develop their creative abilities, refine their skills and share their talents with wider audiences.
Physical potential
Students with physical potential may demonstrate advanced movement skills, coordination, agility, sporting ability or the capacity to develop physical skills quickly.
Our sporting programs provide opportunities for students to develop their abilities through school sport, PSSA competitions, zone representative pathways and specialised physical education.
Students also participate in programs such as gymnastics, athletics and swimming, which provide opportunities to build skills and identify sporting strengths.
Social-emotional potential
Students with social-emotional potential may demonstrate advanced abilities in leadership, communication, self-management or understanding and supporting others.
Brookvale provides opportunities for students to develop these strengths through the Student Representative Council, Year 6 leadership, House Captain roles, Champion Groups and other school leadership initiatives.
These experiences encourage students to take responsibility, work with others, contribute to their school community and develop confidence as leaders.
Recognising and responding to individual potential
We understand that high potential does not always appear as consistently high academic achievement. Students may demonstrate advanced ability in one area while requiring additional support in another.
Our teachers consider multiple sources of information, including assessment results, classroom learning, observations and feedback from students and families, to better understand each child's strengths and learning needs.
Student progress is monitored over time, allowing teachers to adjust the level of challenge and identify further opportunities for extension or enrichment.
ACE Pathways
Our ACE (Adjustment, Challenge and Enrichment) Pathways provide additional academic learning structures through Academic Growth, Academic Enrichment, Academic Extension and Opportunity Classes.
These pathways complement our broader HPGE approach, ensuring that high potential and gifted students can be supported through classroom teaching and opportunities across the wider school.
Supporting your high potential child
Families play an important role in helping us recognise and develop student potential.
If you believe your child demonstrates high potential in any area, we encourage you to speak with their classroom teacher. Working together helps us better understand each student's strengths, interests and learning needs and identify appropriate opportunities for continued growth.
