Co-curricular opportunities

There is something for everyone at Brookvale

At Brookvale Public School we pride ourselves on ensuring that each child has opportunities beyond the curriculum. The school offers a range of co-curricular activities and clubs which span academia, creative and performing arts, sport, technology and student leadership. Outlined below are our current co-curricular offerings. 

Student Representative Council (SRC)

Students who are interested in leadership can nominate to be elected by their classmates to sit on the Student Represenative Council. The council meets oncee a week in Terms 1 and 3 to listen to the ideas of each class in the school. The SRC then votes on the initiatives it wishes to support.

In Term 2 and 4, the SRC works to achieve the initiatives it passed in the prvious term by raising money, liaising with the principal and P&C or engaging in student lead playground initiatives to improve the wellbeing of all students. 

Brookvale Public School Band Program

Students in Years 3-6 can join our school band program. The school band program, under the guidance of Conductor and Band Coordinator Miss Raylie-Anne Baldock continues to flourish.

There is a Training Band for students who are just beginning to learn an instrument and how to play in the band and a Concert Band for students who are developing their skills even further. Our bands perform regularly at eisteddfods and school events. The school has an instrument loan facility to support students to learn an instrument. 

Brookvale Dance Program 

Students at Brookvale are lucky enough to be part of one of the finest dance programs on the Northern Beaches. Under the tuteledge of the very talented Mrs Goodearl, boys and girls are invited to join the senior and junior dance groups. Our Senior Dance Group particiate in the Northern Beaches Dance Festival and has won multiple awards at various local eistedfods. 

DanceSports

Students in Years 5 and 6 love learning ballroom dancing each year and competing with other schools at the Gala Evening. Students learn to waltz, tango, samba and jive and also to be respectful, considerate dance partners. 

School Choirs

Our school choirs sound angelic. There is a Junior Choir and a Senior Choir and anyone can join. Once again led by Mrs Goodearl, the Senior Choir performs locally and at combined schools performances each year. 

Debating

Students in Years 5 and 6 can join the Debating Club. As students develop their debating skills accross the year, teams are chosen to represent the school.Selected students compete in the Premier's Debating Challenge with debates against teams from other schools. 

Writer's Clubs

Students in the Stage 2 and Stage 3 Writers' Clubs meet regularly throughout the year to hone their writing craft and develop their understanding of narrative structure under the guidance of our Teacher Librarian Mrs Murphy-Haste.

Students learn to use advanced sentence structures and figuarative language, while also exploring the techniques authors use to successfully plot and sequence their stories. 

Maths Olympiad and Maths Explorer

Students in Years 3-6 also have the opportunity to join our Maths Olympiad and Maths Explorer teams. Maths Olypmpiad is for High Potential and Gifted Students in mathematics. Students are given a series of very challenging questions and a limited time to answer the questions. 

The Olympiad takes place across a number of rounds against other students in Australia and around the world. Students receive specialist training from our HPGE Committee Coordiator Mrs Natalie De Graaf in preparation for the Olympiad.

Students who enjoy mathematics can also elect to be part of the the Maths Explorer Team and also compete against other like minded students. 

PSSA Inter-school Sport

Students in Years 3-6 are invited to try out for PSSA sports teams. Students selected in PSSA teams travel by bus to sports fields on a Friday afternoon to compete with other schools in  a variety of sports.

The school currently competes in soccer, netball and EagleTag. In addition, students compete in yearly swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals and have the opportunity to represent the school at Zone and Regional carnivals. 

Gymnastics Lessons 

All students particapte in a weekly gymnastics lesson in either Term 1 or Term 3. In Term 1, students in 3-6 walk to our local gym, All the Way Up Gymnastics in Brookvale and receive quality professional instruction by qualified instructors. In Term 3, the instructors from All the Way Up come to the school to work with our younger students in the school hall. 

Specialised physical education lessons in athletics

In Term 2, as part of our PDHPE and school sport program all students have a weekly PE lesson with specialised coaches from Sportspro focused on develping their fundemental and gross movement skills. Students also receive specialist instruction in the various atheltics disciplines in the lead up to the school Athletics Carnival in Term 3.

School Swimming Program

In Term 4 all students from Kindergarten to Year 2 enjoy a week of free swimming instruction at the local pool in readiness for summer. 

Chess Lovers Club

Our senior students run a chess club for students in Year 3-6 at lunchtime once a week. The club welcomes all students who can play chess. Only a basic understanding of the game is required to join.
